Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray came through 6-3 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 in two hours 35 minutes in Antwerp.
The Scot held match point until Copil fought and served for the match.
The 32-year-old made the crucial break in the final set to get to the previous four.
Murray will face either Argentine Guido Pella or Ugo Humbert of France in the semi-finals of Saturday.
