Kevin Chappell Took at an 11-under 59 on Friday from the second round of A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, to record only the 11th sub-60 round .
The American equalled that his compatriot Mark Calcavecchia’s set of nine birdies in a round on the PGA Tour, place at the 2009 Canadian Open in doing so.
Chappell – playing his first championship since returning after 10 months out after back surgery – missed that a 10-foot birdie putt to collapse per stroke short of the Tour album of Jim Furyk.
The 33-year-old opened with a par then birdied the next eight holes prior to adding additional birdies to make the turn in 28 and is currently 10 under for the tournament, having opened with a 71.
Furyk set the record in the final round of this Travelers Championship with a 58 in 2016.
It had been the first sub-60 around on the PGA Tour because Brandt Snedeker’s 59 at the 2018 Wyndham Championship.
Stuart Appleby took at 59 at The Greenbrier in the final round in 2010 to win by a stroke at its first season.
